Test method explained

Relative Compaction Testing

Aitken Rowe is NATA accredited for density testing at all three laboratories — Wagga Wagga, Griffith and Albury/Wodonga — to the Australian Standard and the corresponding state variants. Relative compaction testing is how you prove a soil layer is compacted enough to build on.

What relative compaction testing tells you

Relative compaction testing, also called density testing, checks that soil layers have been adequately compacted. It is most commonly used on road pavements and building pads.

The test compares the field density, measured on site with a nuclear densometer, against a standard density achieved by compacting the same material under controlled conditions in the laboratory. The result is expressed as a percentage of that standard.

Why the fleet size matters

Aitken Rowe maintains a modern fleet of more than 25 nuclear densometers, so a gauge is available at short notice for any project, large or small. In the laboratory, automatic compaction machines are used to minimise human error and keep the standard density consistent between operators.
